MMOinGame SUPERVIVE será un juego Free to Play.
Interview with Jessica Nam about SUPERVIVE
MMOinGame To start, could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your role at Theorycraft Games? What motivated you to join this project, and did you leave a position at another company to be part of the SUPERVIVE team?
Jessica Nam Hi! My name is Jessica Nam and I’m the executive producer of SUPERVIVE. Previously I spent about a decade at Riot Games, most recently as the VP & Executive Producer of League of Legends. As for why I joined Theorycraft: I just wanted to have more impact while developing a great game. I think when you get to a certain level of scale and seniority at a studio, it starts to feel like you’re making more decisions about the organization and company, rather than making the game. Not to say that’s a bad thing, but I just wanted to get back to making games with a small group of developers I trust.
MMOinGame The initial project was called Project Loki. Can you explain why this initial name was chosen and what led to the final decision to name the game SUPERVIVE? What significance does SUPERVIVE hold for the team and the game’s vision?
Jessica Nam We actually went through a few names before we arrived at SUPERVIVE. It was always on the list since the beginning, but for other versions of the game it wasn’t quite it. It was only about a year and a half ago when we made some significant changes to the pacing and speed of combat and movement that we started looking for a name that was more joyful and optimistic – something that communicated the hype and chaos of the game you see today. The name itself comes from a few references, like the combination of SUPER and SURVIVE (to go beyond surviving), but also VIVE in French and Italian roughly translates to LIVE. So it’s more than surviving in a battle royale – it’s about going above and beyond; dreaming up crazy plays and winning together. It’s also fun to say!
MMOinGame In the recent playtest, there were 14 heroes available, divided into 9 fighters, 3 protectors, and 2 controllers. How many heroes are you planning to launch in the final version of the game, and what new roles can we expect in the future?
Jessica Nam We’re currently aiming for 16 hunters at open beta, with more on the way throughout open beta and at launch. There will be no final version of the game, just an increasingly better version of the game and as many hunters as we can!!! In terms of what new roles to expect, while we do use roles to communicate roughly what a hunter does, we’re more interested in what kind of exciting new ideas we can bring to the table. Because SUPERVIVE is this unique blend of gameplay genres, we have a lot of fun bringing in character archetypes from other kinds of genres, just to see how they adapt to SUPERVIVE’s gameplay. There’s a lot of space for us to explore!
MMOinGame How frequently do you plan to introduce new heroes in SUPERVIVE? Will it be a regular seasonal release or will it depend on other factors?
Jessica Nam Our current plan is to release a new hunter roughly every two months after entering open beta. That will definitely change as we hear from players what they like or want more of.
MMOinGame What will the competitive ranking system look like in SUPERVIVE? Are you planning to implement leagues similar to bronze, silver, gold, etc., or will there be a different classification system?
Jessica Nam While we do have ranks to indicate skill-level in SUPERVIVE, our ranked system is going to be different from a traditional team vs. team game. For example, there are a lot of ways to perform and gain ranked points through both placing high in the lobby, as well as taking proactive action so you’re not just sitting in a corner for 30 minutes.
MMOinGame During the playtest, a large typical battle royale map was used. Do you plan to introduce more maps in the future, or will you focus on improving and expanding the current map?
Jessica Nam Something I’m really excited about is how the world of SUPERVIVE has come together as this quilt of patched-together biomes floating in the sky. This gives us a lot of creative freedom as to how we iterate on the map; rather than just adding in new paths or having to make entirely new maps, we can add in new biomes piece-by-piece, or take out old ones to update the layout. I can see us evolving this map in infinite ways!
MMOinGame What are your plans for the eSports scene in SUPERVIVE? Do you aspire to develop a competitive scene similar to the LEC for League of Legends, or do you have a different approach in mind?
Jessica Nam Our general approach to esports is to see what our players want, and then to meet that demand. As such, we have no plans for a franchised or formal esports league out the gate, but we will be supporting grassroots tournaments and community play as much as we can. We already host competitive showmatches with professional shoutcasters before every SUPERVIVE playtest, and there’s a few really driven community members who are developing their own tournament circuits for when we launch.
With all of that said, we also think that competitive SUPERVIVE is probably going to be different from traditional team vs. team games; with more spectacle, entertainment, and crazy strategies.
MMOinGame SUPERVIVE will be a Free to Play game. What monetization model will you implement, and how will you ensure that in-game purchases do not affect competitive balance?
Jessica Nam SUPERVIVE will be a free-to-play game, like League of Legends or Fortnite, with purchasable cosmetics. Getting to work in 3D and with a variety of dynamic camera angles means we can really dial up the cool moments on our skins, and we know players like expressing themselves in this way. There will be no pay-for-power; you can unlock any hunter quickly through play, and you can try out all hunters in practice mode.
We honestly love developing in this free-to-play model because it most closely aligns our development strategy with players: we can focus on making a great game that everyone can play, and it’s only after they’ve played and invested that they would ever choose to support us.
